Healthy City Guide: London, England, UK

If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen my stories from where I was eating and my favourite places I discovered while in London. I have to say the food scene and the healthy food scene for that matter in London is much better than most places in North America… Everything tasted exceptionally better especially the almond milk, which I discovered Rude Healthy and the Oatly oat milk to be on the top of my favourite plant-based milks.

After spending almost a week in England I got to experience some of the most iconic vegan and vegetarian restaurants that London has to offer from the Deliciously Ella Deli to Farmacy; I fell in love with the wide variety of options available almost everywhere I went. Eating healthy while traveling can have its challenges if you are not in a veg-friendly city, however you will not have this problem in London and from everywhere I have travelled I have found London to be the most accommodating!

I often find restaurants to go to through Instagram, however there is an app called “Happy Cow” which provides users with the closest vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the area; which is incredibly helpful while traveling.

I hope that my healthy city guide will help provide you with some of the best vegan/vegetarian options that London has to offer, and if you happen to find yourself in the magical city I hope it comes in handy!

1.26 Grains– This is definitely at the top of my list considering I went to 26 Grains three times. 26 Grains (if you don’t already know about it) founded by Alex Hely-Hutchinson is located in Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden and specializes in grains; specifically porridge. Although not specifically vegan/vegetarian, 26 Grains has a ton of options for everyone and their porridge is to DIE for. If you are to visit any of the cafés/restaurants I have mentioned, I would strongly recommend 26 Grains above all- they even hand roll their own oats! I ordered the Nordic Spice Porridge and the Cacao Banana- go with the Nordic Spice; you won’t regret it.

2. Deliciously Ella Deli– As an avid reader of the blog ‘Deliciously Ella‘ founded by Ella Mills, I had to go visit her famous delis. I went to both London locations on Seymour Place and Weighhouse Street, I went to Seymour twice (the original location) and liked it better than Weighhouse. I ordered the Five Bean Chilli and Rustic Cornbread along with the Spicy Aubergine with the Peanut Celeriac Salad. The Spicy Aubergine definitely had to be my favourite though- packed full of spices and topped with a coconut cream.

3.Farmacy– Located on Portobello Road in Notting Hill is one of the fanciest vegan/vegetarian restaurants that I have ever experienced. All the food was incredibly fresh, and I have never experienced a restaurant that when I sat down I didn’t know what to order because a- everything is vegan and b- everything sounded incredibly appetizing. I ordered the Chef’s Clean Curry and the Nice Cream with Brownies; it tasted incredible! I definitely recommend Farmacy for those who are introducing friends/family to healthy vegan cuisine for the first time

4. Daylesford Farm– I had the amazing opportunity to stay at Daylesford Farm in Gloucestershire in one of their cottages. I dined at both The Old Spot and The Trough. All of Daylesford’s ingredients are natural, organic, and grown on their own farm. All menu options are healthy and you can get the best salads, vegan pizza, and vegan blueberry ‘cheesecake’ at their cafés. Daylesford’s focus is seasonality and quality and although not vegan/vegetarian focused, I had some of the best food in my life there. Daylesford has cafés throughout London in Notting Hill, Marylebone, and Pimlico.

5. Bodyism– A great place to grab a matcha latte, acai bowl, avo toast, and apparently the best cookie (as my friend told me!). Bodyism is a gym with a café located in Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill. Founded by James Duigan who is an internationally renowned author and fitness trainer, his café embraces a good vibes only attitude and they stencil all of their lattes with ‘LOVE’. A great place to grab breakfast or a snack!

Where I didn’t get to go but you should try:

  1. Wulf & Lamb– New vegan restaurant in Sloane Square.
  2. Wild Foods Cafe– Raw food vegan restaurant in Neal’s Yard.
  3. Rawligion– Raw cakes, smoothies, and quick meals.
  4. Dishoom–  Bombay Michelin Star restaurant which apparently serves the BEST chai. Several locations throughout London.
  5. Yorica– Vegan frozen yogurt and ice cream with all the toppings you can imagine. Located in Notting Hill and Soho.
  6. Mildreds– Apparently one of the best vegetarian restaurants London has to offer. Several locations throughout the city.
